Frommer's Photo Contest

Dear Reader,

If you’re anything like me, you probably have hundreds of travel photos stored on your computer that you’re not using for anything.

So I thought I’d mention the Frommer’s photo contest, giving you the chance to get your travel photo published on a guidebook cover and win $5,000.

To submit, you’ll first need to sign up at the contest page

Then, you can submit as many images as you’d like. Be sure to read all image requirements and details about rights on the contest rules page.

While you retain the rights to your photos with the Frommer's photo contest, Frommer’s may alter and/or use any photo that you submit for its own purposes, without offering you compensation. So be careful which photos you send in if you don’t want them to be used without payment.

And, speaking of photo contests…

Don’t forget that our monthly Photo Challenge is free to enter, too. This month’s theme, The Great Escape, is already collecting some great shots. Monthly winners get a $30 gift certificate to the AWAI E-Bookstore, plus they’re entered into the running for the yearly $2,000 Grand Prize. Enter your one best, theme-appropriate shot, here.

We don’t claim the rights to any photos submitted. But we do, occasionally, use photos that have been submitted as photo lessons in our weekly tips.

It’s true, you won’t make a living submitting your work to photography contests, but because it is so low-pressure, it’s a great place to cut your teeth.

Plus, contests and challenges give you a chance to practice the elements of good photography composition, lighting, exposure, focus, and angles. They help you to quickly build up your own personal stock of potentially saleable photos. And they give you some incentive to hone your skills.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about a way you CAN make a living with your photography -- by selling it as editorial. Professional photographer Shelly Perry won an award from Getty Images last year for her editorial photography work in Istanbul.  Tomorrow she’ll share with you the five elements you need to create a saleable story with your images.

P.S. After reading Shelly’s article tomorrow, you might realize that you already have enough photos to create an editorial spread from your collection.   I, for one, looked back through my images from past travels yesterday, and realized I’d forgotten a lot of shots that I could probably sell today.

In our new e-guide, 101 Places to Get Published in 2010, we included magazines, newspapers, websites, and other places were you can sell your travel articles and photographs.  And we also included a few online stock agencies and book publishers, too. You can get a free copy when you help us clear the shelves of our Breaking into In-Flight Magazines program -- on close-out now for 50% off.

When they’re gone, they’re gone.  Our fulfillment house is closing its doors so everything must go and I can’t promise we’ll ever reprint.  Go here to claim one of the last copies at a crazy discount.
