Statue of Liberty Replicas: Photo Assignment

Dear Reader,

I left Paris without the shots of the Statue of Liberty I wanted.

My idea was to photograph the Statue of Liberty replicas in Paris for a travel article I could pitch to magazines and newspapers to run around the 4th of July holiday.  But alas, traveling with an 8-month-old introduces challenges I’m not always prepared for.  It was too cold and rainy to drag her across the city for the photos so I’m home now, empty handed.

This did, however, give me another idea for a travel piece I might try to pitch if I can get it done in time.  And I’d like you to help.

Statue of Liberty replicas stand all across the U.S. and Europe.  Not just France and New York.

Perhaps we can tackle a much bigger assignment together.

If you live near (or are traveling to) any of these locations in the next two weeks, let’s work together to create a photo essay we can pitch to magazines and newspapers...

Staff writer, Bonnie Caton is still in Paris so I sent her out on my behalf to photograph the Statue of Liberty replicas there.  Here are the photos she sent me:

Flame of Liberty on the Pont de l'Alma

Statue of Liberty at the Pont de Grenelle

Statue of Liberty in the Jardin de Luxembourg

Statue of Liberty inside the Musée des Arts et Metiers

If you can do the same (remember what you’ve been learning in this newsletter about creating a magazine-quality photograph -- Rule of Thirds, leading lines, Framing), please email me at lori@thetravelwriterslife.com and let me know which statues you can photograph and when you think you’ll be able to send in the pictures.  I’ll take care of contacting magazines and newspapers if we get enough responses.

Fingers crossed,

-- Lori

P.S. If you have a unique and fun story idea like this one, write it up or turn it into a photo essay and submit it for publication. Writing about your travels can turn your next trip into an adventure... and make you some extra spending money, too.

We’re working on a guide now for those who want to getting started in travel writing in their spare time, with as little effort as possible.  It’s called The Lazy Man’s Guide to Travel Writing, and it should be back from the editor next week.  I’ll let you know more tomorrow.

P.P.S. Join us live in Santa Monica, CA this August 5-7 for the ultimate crash course in travel writing.  Freelance writer and editor Jennifer Stevens along with travel editors like Kyle Wagner from the Denver Post will take you by the hand through the art of writing travel articles and selling them to magazines and newspapers across the globe.  In just three days you’ll learn everything you need to know to turn your travels into paychecks.  And you’ll have the opportunity to walk away with a travel article that you can submit to editors when you return home.  More details (along with success stories from past workshop attendees) are online.
