How Long Does It Take to Make a Living from Stock?

Bonnie here, again, writing to you from Quito, Ecuador, on the last day of our stock photo workshop with pro stock photographer Shelly Perry.

Between photo excursions into the Ecuadorian countryside and traveling through the mountainous terrain between Cotacachi and Quito, I admit I got a bit overwhelmed and forgot to share our survey results from earlier this week. So here they are:

Fifty-one percent of readers said you like stock as a way to fund your travels and adventures around the world.

The remaining 49 percent are drawn to stock photography because of the residual income. The security of an income that’s recession-proof and continues to accumulate whether you’re working or not, sounds pretty good.

Stock photography can do either for you -- or both. So how do you get from where you are now to enjoying a consistent income stream, traveling the world, and supporting yourself on your photography?

Answer: Get started today, wherever you are.

Success in stock photography, Shelly told me, is just a matter of building up your portfolio. And the sooner you can get started, the sooner you’ll start earning a fairly consistent income.

Our attendees have had the chance to start building their portfolios during the past week in Ecuador. And many of them have already seen vast improvements in the quality of their work.

Take a look at a few of my favorites from the week:

How long will it take to start earning a steady income?

In Shelly’s first month at iStock, she earned just $8.80. Three months later, she got her first payout of $100. And at the end of the first year, she had about 400 images up and was making around $300 per month.

Now she’s making enough to support herself with stock photography alone -- and she certainly makes more than she ever did working her old social services job.

You can, too… it’s just a matter of wanting it, and going for it.
