I grew up in Forest Grove, Oregon in an average, everyday family. My dad was a minister, my mom an executive secretary…and I was a tomboy who got into all the mischief I could find. You know what they say about “preachers’ kids?” That was me to a “T.” I was on the swim team, I played kick-the-can, ran loose around the neighborhood, and constantly sported skinned knees.
And, I had this overwhelming passion for creativity—even as a kid. I took photography classes in high school, and practiced every chance I got.

So, I put my passion on the back burner, went to college, and got a “real” job… in social services.

Back then, (and this was just three years ago), the traditional school of thought was to buy photos from a stock agency if you couldn’t shoot them yourself.
And, since I didn’t have doves… and no one I knew had doves… and it costs several hundred dollars to rent doves (which, by the way, don’t come back after you release them – even if you miss the shot)… I had no other choice but to buy the picture from an agency.
Trouble was the stock agency wanted $600 for a picture of doves.
I wasn’t making much on this job, and my client, the self-published musician, didn’t have $600 in his budget for the doves either, so, I was about to give up.
That’s when I stumbled on an ad that took me to a website selling dove photos. And bingo!
Not only was there a photo I could use…but, instead of several hundred dollars, it would only cost me a single buck. And, this image was every bit as good as those being sold by the stock agency.
I couldn’t have been happier.
But, it did seem a little strange that I found this photo online for a dollar when a similar photo at a traditional stock agency cost over $600. But hey – who was I to judge, right?
That’s when it all started. I bookmarked this website and bought a few photos there from time to time.
Meanwhile, I considered submitting some of my own work to the online company. But selling my precious images for $1 a piece seemed unnatural.

So, instead, I submitted my photos to traditional stock agencies. ”Six hundred dollars for a single photograph…that’s a lot of money,” I thought. “Sell one a month and I’ll be happy.”
So, I began. I sent in a few images…I was accepted…and I sat by the mailbox waiting for my checks to start rolling in. Just one a month, I told myself. Just one a month.
But three months went by…and no check. Four months went by…still no check. Finally, I realized my one-a-month dream was over.
I went back online to learn more about “micro-stock” sites—the types of sites where I found my doves. Yes, those sites that were selling photos for $1 instead of $600.
Still, I wasn’t convinced. Selling my photos for $1seemed a little counter-intuitive to say the least. When I considered the cost of my camera and the time it takes to capture a picture and process it, it’d cost me way more than a dollar.

I've been a professional writer for nearly 20 years now. I was the editor of a national publication. I'm the author of a course on travel writing. But the editor who assigned me the piece -- about a tourist attraction in my hometown -- asked for photos to go with it.
I told her "no problem." And then I turned to my husband and told him, "Hey, I just got you a job."
Now, I should explain: My husband has always taken very nice shots of the kids and of places we've traveled over the years. But he has absolutely no formal training as a photographer.
