RED, WHITE, AND BLUE -- WINNING ENTRIES
By Shelly Perry in Portland, OR

July’s photo challenge theme, “Red, White, and Blue,” brought in a plethora of shots that certainly fit the theme, many focusing in on the more patriotic concept.

The winners are all shots that tackled the theme and used the technical tools we profile on a regular basis. June’s winner profjjw was our guest judge this time around. See what she had to say about her first-place pick below...

** First Place goes to sirandel for “His Country”

** Second Place goes to Tappa for “Oh No Not Again”

** Third Place goes to alefros for “Tradition”

** Honorable Mention goes to wbisson1 for “LIQUID GLORY”

FIRST PLACE -- HIS COUNTRY

For first place, I chose the seemingly un-posed photojournalism image of a child at work called, “His Country.”  I particularly liked the composition of the image. The image was taken from a position slightly above and behind the child, causing the child and the flag to be on the diagonal in the final image. This placement draws the viewer right into the image and certainly tells a story. Notice also that the line in the concrete leads to the point of the action, the child’s hand.  Congratulations to the photographer on a great image.

SECOND PLACE -- OH NO NOT AGAIN

This shot is such a great animal portrait. I love the expression and how he seems to be looking right into the camera at the viewer.  It appears to have excellent focus, and the shallow depth of field is imperative in this type of shot (otherwise the background can quickly become too distracting). The photographer pulled it off beautifully in this case. The hat turns this cute dog shot into a theme winner.

THIRD PLACE -- TRADITION

This shot is another good example of how using a shallow depth of field can take an otherwise distracting background and minimize the problem, bringing all our attention to the subject of focus and the photo: the little boy and his watermelon face. Composition here is very nice with him sitting over on the thirds line of the photo.

HONORABLE MENTION -- LIQUID GLORY

I found this to be such an interesting shot. The colors and the texture of the water work together to create  an abstract take on the theme. I am not sure if it was a regular flag or not, but it looks like a fish to me, which I find humorous. This shot reminds me that there are interesting and unique shots in some of the most mundane or typical subjects -- if you just keep looking.

Congratulations to each of our winners!!

The first-place winner will get a $30 gift certificate to the AWAI E-Bookstore, and all winners will be entered into the Hall of Fame, to compete for the $2,000 Grand Prize in October.
