Imagine floating above the jungle floor atop an elephant, swaying back and forth as your gentle giant safely navigates over streams and under the lush canopy above.
Shafts of sun fall on a veil of vines just down the path, where other elephants lumber. You take out your camera to capture the fairytale scene … you expertly snap a few shots … and capture a shot that you’ll sell to a magazine when you get home.
If the adventurous life of a photographer interests you … if you want to find an income source that lets you travel whenever you like and live wherever you prefer … then this is, hands down, the best place to begin.
Join us in heavenly Thailand…
and plunge yourself into the photographer’s
delicious, adventure-filled life.
This December, escape the cold for seven warm, action-packed days in exotic Thailand. With a professional photographer by your side, you’ll explore the glittering Buddhist temples, Royal Palace grounds, and bustling street markets of Bangkok, as well as an elephant sanctuary among the spanning rice fields and enchanting rainforests of northern Chiang Mai. While you’re there, you’ll also get to tour the fruit market, filled with a myriad of fruits you may never have seen … and try your hand at cooking – and tasting – coconut curries and pad Thai in a traditional Thai cooking class. With just 8 other attendees on this trip, you’ll be sure to walk away with some breath-taking photos and a new appreciation for this beautiful country and culture.
Where incense mingles with jasmine … where saffron-robed monks chat on their cell phones … where candy-colored mirrors glitter atop ornate palace rooftops … where fresh Pad Thai sizzles in open-air woks … where markets buzz, chatter, and clang with the city pulse while tuk-tuk taxis whiz by …
This is Bangkok -- the perfect place to begin your photo expedition. And what better place to learn about the wonders and excitement of travel photography? Each step leads to another captivating photo opportunity in the “Venice of the East.”
When you join us in Thailand, you and your fellow travel photographers will begin by experiencing and photographing the best parts of Bangkok, as you make your way through the Chinatown market … speed through neighborhood canals by boat … and feel the cool marble on your toes as you pad along, barefoot, through the majestic, gold-trimmed temples.
And just when you’re ready for a break from the excitement of the city, we’ll whisk you away to tranquil, northern Chaing Mai. There, you’ll explore the jungle on the back of an elephant … bargain with local artisans in the night market … watch as local artisans paint, carve, weave, and hone their crafts … and try your hand at cooking up a spectacular Pad Thai, green curry, coconut rice, and more.
Of course, you'll do it all in the jolly company of professional photographer Rich Wagner, whose eye-opening daily photo reviews will help you learn to find art in everyday scenes. Attendees on expeditions with Rich notice a big transformation in their photographs within the first two days … and you will, too.
You’ll walk away with amazing photos and memories of your travels, plus, Rich will also give you the know-how to sell them when you return home.
Attendees of these live workshops boast great successes selling their photos in magazines, galleries, online, and more … and you needn't have a lick of experience to join their ranks.
Rich’s presentations on selling and reselling your photographs include everything from taking the right kinds of photographs … to knowing and understanding which market will be most likely to buy them.
What’s more, every workshop participant will have access to pre-recorded videos when you return home that show the ins and outs of photo-editing software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop -- so even your less-than-perfect shots can be sold for a by-line and a check.
Whether you have little experience and modest equipment or you’re already a talented amateur photographer, you’ll benefit from this program. It will teach you the tricks the pros use to take photos editors buy … and teach you, too, how to turn your snapshots into profits again and again.
This will be a trip you’ll remember forever. You’ll not only come away with amazing photographs of Thailand and the know-how to sell them when you return home, but you’ll also gain a new appreciation for Thai food and culture. You’ll learn how to travel like a photographer working “on assignment,” and you’ll gain all the skills you need to create images good enough for publication in magazines or to be sold as fine art.
Activity Level
Very high activity. Most of this workshop will be done out and about on foot. You’ll need your walking shoes on every day of this workshop, and you’ll need to be able to get in and out of tuk-tuks on your own.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites. This workshop is for people of all skill levels and experience and the concepts discussed are doable by anyone. Point and shoot cameras are welcome.
Your Itinerary

Thursday, December 8th
Cross the International Date Line and lose a day on your calendar.
Friday, December 9th

This day is at your leisure to adjust to the time change, enjoy the fresh fruit, and maybe do a little shopping, take a nap, or join your fellow attendees for dinner.
Saturday, December 10th
After meeting the group for a sumptuous breakfast, you’ll head out in our private, air-conditioned van with our local tour guide, where Rich will give the first few photo secrets and techniques for you to practice during the day. You’ll see, smell and taste the wonders of the colorful Chinatown market, trying your hand at street photography in a fascinating locale.
Next, you’ll zip off to the awe-inspiring Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, with its colossal Buddha statue inside.
After a tasty lunch in a local restaurant, you’ll take off on a boat tour of the old canal neighborhoods surrounding Bangkok, and catch a glimpse of canal life.
The day will end with sunset photos looking out over Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn, across the Chao Phraya River.
Sunday, December 11th
Today you’ll go a little deeper into Bangkok lifestyle with a trip out to the Mae Klong market, where vendors set up stalls along the railroad tracks. At the same time every day, the entire market parts, and vendors move their wares to make way for the train. It’s a sight to see!
From there, we’ll head to the floating market, where you’ll watch and photograph local women selling fruit, hats, crafts, and cooking entire meals from the front of their wooden boats.
We’ll wrap up the afternoon with a photo review before heading off on our quick flight to Chiang Mai.
Monday, December 12th
Today you’ll plunge into a more tranquil way of life in cooler, northern Chiang Mai. After a delicious breakfast you’ll take off with a local guide to visit the ancient Wat Doi Suthep temple on the hill above Chiang Mai. Here it is said that a sacred white elephant chose the location of the temple.
Afterwards, you’ll get a taste of true local life while visiting and photographing local craftspeople in their home compounds, where they make colorful paper and intricately sewn umbrellas, along with other crafts to sell at the market.
This evening you’ll enjoy another eye-opening photo review, with free time later to visit the famed night market. Make sure to bring a list of Christmas gifts, and get ready to bargain!
Tuesday, December 13th
Today is all about indulging in the delicious flavors and aromas of Thailand. Start with a light breakfast at our guest house … then take off on a guided tour with our chef and instructor through the fruit and vegetable market.
Then, with Yui and Kwan from A Lot of Thai cooking school, you’ll learn the best secrets to whipping up easy and delicious Thai cuisine. Get ready to cook and eat a LOT of good food and come away with a full-color cook book -- though Yui gives away plenty of tips, so you may still want to take notes.
They’ll slow down the lessons down for us so we can snap photos, too.
We’ll wrap up the day with photo review.
Wednesday, December 14th
Today holds a very special, rare treat -- a visit to the elephant refuge. Watch as the elephant trainers, or “mahouts” bathe their elephants, and demonstrate training practices. Each elephant has its own mahout for life, and the two become bonded together as partners.
Then, then take off swaying through the jungle atop an elephant on a one-hour trek over streams and through lush vines. The photo opportunities here are once-in-a-lifetime.
After lunch, you’ll see and photograph exotic plant life in the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, where we’ll find orchids, lotuses and other native Thai plants to shoot.
This evening, enjoy re-living your experience and watch how much your photos have improved over the last few days with photo review time.
Tonight you’ll enjoy a group farewell dinner with your local guides and new friends.
Thursday, December 15th
The early part of today is at your leisure to relax or explore Chiang Mai … maybe catch up on some shopping or check out another one of the local temples in town.
By this point, you’ll be well trained in the art of taking and editing saleable photos but you’ll still want feedback. We’ll host a group review and talk about some more advanced Lightroom features that’ll make tracking and selling your photos a breeze. Then, we’ll fly back to Bangkok.
Friday, December 16th
Catch your flight home or extend your trip. If you fly home today, you’ll re-cross the International Date Line and regain the day you lost, arriving back home on the 17th.
Note: Schedule and speakers are subject to change.
